Slate’s EV Pickup Could Disrupt UK’s Electric Market, Says Autotrader
How significant is the arrival of Slate’s pickup for the UK’s mainstream EV market?
Any new product in the EV space should be met with interest, especially when it comes to pick-up trucks. The electric pick-up market is still a largely untapped segment in the UK, so Slate’s entry is both timely and intriguing. As yet, there are few BEV pick-up trucks for consumers to choose from, although brands like Isuzu and Maxus have launched products that do offer consumers that all-important 1-tonne payload, car-like comfort in the cabin and a usable range of over 140 miles. If Slate can produce an electric pick-up truck that sits aside or exceeds the quality and practicality levels already on display, then their product could be an interesting alternative to UK motorists.
Are UK electric drivers becoming more adventurous with EV brands?
Consumers do tend to trust the brands they know, but every brand was a new brand at one point. Slate needs to let its product do the talking, because if the vehicle suits a buyer's needs then the name won't matter at the point of acquisition.
Could Slate’s new personalised approach offer help to break down EV adoption barriers, like cost and range anxiety?
Potentially, yes, but only if it can address the adoption barriers. A usable range, good payload and affordable price (especially when broken down into monthly finance or lease payments) will go a long way. The customisable approach is very interesting with a single trim level that you adjust to suit your needs, although some may consider it a gimmick or curio. Again, the product needs to do the talking and be able to suit consumer requirements without sacrificing substance for style.
