Drivers Vote SEAT Models as the Cars Which Have Aged Best
New research from car-selling expert Autotrader reveals that when it comes to car design evolution, modernity wins, and it’s not even a close call.
Over 3,000 drivers across three generations were asked to vote on whether they preferred the original generation design, or newer iterations of classic car model. Motorists admitted that they prefer the newer car designs with a near-unanimous vote on most models, but there's one exception. The MINI Hatch was revealed as the nostalgic favourite, with 57% of drivers saying they like the original model more than the current design.
The classic designs drivers can't let go of
While the MINI Hatch is the clear nostalgic winner, it's not completely alone in its classic appeal. The research from Autotrader also reveals a handful of models where original designs still hold significant sway with drivers.
The original SKODA Kodiaq ranks as the second most-loved classic design, with 41.1% of drivers preferring the older model. The first-generation Fiat 500s deliberately retro-inspired styling wins 40.7% of votes, while the Peugeot 208's first iteration still appeals to 37% of motorists.
Other models that drivers feel peaked early include the BMW 1 Series (30.3%), Nissan Qashqai (29.7%), and Mercedes C-Class (26.5%), all designs where nearly a third of drivers believe the original was superior.
Top 10 Cars Motorists Still Love in Their Original Form
MINI Hatch tops the list of cars motorists still love in their original form
The MINI Hatch stands alone as the only model where drivers prefer the original design to the latest version, with 57.2% choosing the classic over the latest generation.
The pull of the MINI Hatch’s nostalgia is powerful: over two-thirds (67.6%) of over 50’s can't let go of the iconic original. Even middle-aged drivers (31 to 50 year-olds) prefer the original model at 58.7%. It's only among younger drivers aged 18 to 30 that the tide is starting to turn, and even then, just narrowly, with only 54.8% favouring the newer version. For some icons it seems, there’s very little to be improved.
SEAT, Volkswagen and Suzuki among the best ‘glow up’ designs
SEAT dominates the top of the rankings of cars that have had the best design evolution, claiming both first and second place in Autotrader’s ‘Glow Up’ list.
The SEAT Ibiza's transformation wins an impressive 90.7% of drivers’ votes. What started as a boxy, budget hatchback has evolved into a sportier version that has won over young and old drivers alike.
The SEAT Leon follows close behind with 87.5% of drivers preferring its modern design to the original. Originally SEAT's practical response to the popular Golf, the Leon is now an understated but sporty car, and nearly nine in ten drivers are happier with the change.
The Volkswagen Polo comes third in the ‘Best Glow-Up' rankings. The Polo stands out for its consistency, with the strong resemblance between the 1990s model and the 2025 version showing it’s possible to successfully modernise a classic without losing what made it popular in the first place.
As for the Swift, Suzuki intentionally redesigned the 2005 onwards versions to echo European hot hatches, and it clearly worked. The newer iterations of the Nissan Micra (86.1%), Vauxhall Corsa (85.9%), and Renault Clio (85.6%) also impressed the public, with all three scoring over 85% approval.
Top 10 Car Glow-Ups Drivers Love Most
Our research shows that car design has come a long way, with the majority of drivers preferring how modern models look. But the MINI Hatch is proof that some designs are so iconic they don't need a glow up. Understanding which car designs have stood the test of time can be valuable when you're considering selling your car. But ultimately, care and condition count even more. A model that’s been looked after, whether it's a modern favourite or a classic choice, will always get more attention than one that's been neglected.
