Auto Trader Fastest Selling Index | December and 2019

Year of the used EV as Renault ZOE revealed as fastest selling used car of 2019

  • Renault ZOE crowned fastest selling used car in December and 2019 according to Auto Trader’s Fastest Selling Index
  • Used SUV desirability declines, accounting for just 20% of the annual fastest selling list

According to the Auto Trader Fastest Selling Index, the 2015 Renault ZOE (electric automatic) is on average 2019’s fastest selling used car. The French compact EV’s rise to the top marks the end of the reign of SUVs which have traditionally dominated the annual list. In 2018 the Vauxhall Mokka was named the fastest, whilst the Kia Sportage took the top spot in both 2016 and 2017.

The Index, which live tracks the speed at which vehicles sell combined with a 1-100 AT Retail Rating determined by live supply and demand, shows a shift away from used SUV desirability. Just 20% of this year’s list was an SUV, compared to a commanding 80% in 2018.

This year’s annual list also shows a strong preference for automatic transmissions, with eight of the top 10 fastest selling used cars featuring this transmission type.

The data reveals Renault’s title was well deserved. Not only did it take the annual top spot, but the 2017 variant was the second fastest and the 2016 was fourth. What’s more, December marks the second consecutive month the ZOE topped the national top 10 of fastest turners. If priced to the market, it has the current potential to sell in just 21 days.

Whilst the Renault ZOE tops the list of fastest turners, it may not be the most desirable when compared with brand new models. On the Auto Trader marketplace the ZOE sits at the bottom of the top 10 most searched for electric vehicles: data for November revealed that the Volkswagen e-Golf was the most searched for electric car, followed by the venerable BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf.

Commenting on the results, Auto Trader’s director of commercial products, Karolina Edwards-Smajda, said: “Tracking circa 1.9 million data points, the Index provides an accurate barometer of consumer demand and growing trends in the market. Over the last few years we’ve seen some important milestones for used EVs. In January 2017 a BMW i3 marked the first time one had made it onto the national top 10 and in July last year, a ZOE was the first to actually top the list. With three taking the number one spot in 2019[1] and a ZOE crowned the year’s overall fastest selling is hugely significant and a clear sign of things to come as we move towards more sustainable forms of transportation.”

The Auto Trader Retail Rating metric is based on analysis of over 1.9 million vehicles each day, including 90,000 vehicle updates and an average of 19,000 vehicles added or removed from Auto Trader. Coupled with data from circa 450,000 daily trade used car listings, as well as additional dealer forecourt and website data, it’s the industry’s largest and most robust dataset. It enables the Index to view which used cars have the potential to sell the fastest today, rather than looking back on the previous month retrospectively.

Edwards – Smajda continued: “This month’s data indicates that, despite widely documented strong new sales, there is a slowing in demand for used SUVs with all but one SUV pushed off the list, replaced by economical petrol hatches. Whether this is a result of consumers opting to make a saving with a cheaper vehicle before Christmas or is the start of a slow down in SUV demand remains to be seen.”
