Familiar favourite practical used cars set the pace in September's fastest selling rankings
The UK used car market is entering the autumn trading period with strong momentum, as second-hand vehicles are leaving retailer forecourts in an average of 29 days so far in September – one day faster than in August and in line with the same period last year1. According to the latest market intelligence from Autotrader, practical, smaller used cars are among the fastest to leave forecourts this month, with hatchbacks and compact SUVs accounting for the majority of September’s top 10 fastest sellers.
Smaller, practical models move fastest as autumn demand builds
That demand is reflected clearly at model level. The MG HS leads the list, taking the top spot after spending an average of just 16 days on forecourts, followed by a mix of familiar hatchbacks and compact SUVs including the Toyota Yaris, Kia Sportage, Kia Niro, Hyundai BAYON, Honda Jazz, Suzuki S-Cross and Vauxhall Mokka Electric.
Although several SUVs feature in the ranking, many sit within the compact or mid-size segments, suggesting buyers are continuing to prioritise manageable, versatile cars that balance practicality, affordability and everyday usability. The strength of this part of the market is also reflected in the absence of larger premium SUVs from the fastest-selling list, with older diesel Land Rover models instead appearing among September’s slowest sellers.
Fuel type remains an important part of the picture, but not the whole story. Hybrids and EVs account for seven of the ten fastest-selling used cars this month, while used EVs aged three to five years continue to show strong demand, averaging 25 days to sell and outperforming the wider used car market by four days. Across all age bands, petrol, full and mild hybrid, and electric vehicles are currently tied as the fastest-selling fuel types overall, each averaging 28 days to sell.
At brand level, Asian manufacturers are the most prominent across this month’s list of fastest sellers, with MG, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Suzuki and Honda accounting for eight of the top ten positions. At the other end of the market, older diesel saloons and some luxury internal combustion engine models are taking longest to sell; the 10–15-year-old diesel BMW 3 Series is lingering the longest on forecourts this month, taking more than three times longer than the MG HS to sell.
The used car market is carrying good momentum into autumn, with healthy buyer demand reflected in the increased speed of stock turn. What stands out in September is the strength of demand for practical, everyday stock, with hatchbacks and smaller SUVs prominent across the fastest selling rankings.
“For retailers, the message is clear: the market is moving quickly, but not evenly. The biggest opportunities are likely to come from stocking the vehicles that match live buyer demand, pricing them competitively, and using real-time data to identify where they can turn stock quickly while still protecting margin.”
