New Car Registrations | December 2022
Auto Trader's Editorial Director, Erin Baker, shares her view on the latest new car registrations as well as the 2022 review
“Supply chain issues may have been to blame for the new car market’s worst year for three decades but 2023 should see a gradual recovery as those pressures ease, despite a backdrop of recession.
“The bright spot last year was battery EVs and hybrids, which accounted for almost one in four of new car sales. But we’re worried this is unlikely to last after signs a fall in consumer demand on our marketplace towards the end of 2022.
“EVs need to be easier to afford, charge and buy to keep sales on track and ultimately meet the government’s targets. Affordability will be the biggest barrier to mass EV adoption, as the cost-of-living crunch and prolonged concern over electricity prices threaten to be long-term problems.”
