Auto Trader Fastest Selling Index | August 2019

Big is best as MPVs top the list as the UK’s current fastest selling used cars

According to the inaugural findings of the Auto Trader Fastest Selling Index, if priced to the live retail market, the 2016 Seat Alhambra (diesel, automatic) is currently the UK’s fastest selling used car, capable of leaving forecourts in just 24 days.

It was joined in the national top three by the all-electric 2015 Renault Zoe (automatic), which is also predicted to sell in an average of just 24 days. Underpinning the growing appetite for low emission vehicles, it was followed by the 2016 Zoe (electric, automatic), predicted to turn in an equally respectable 26 days.

The new Index is powered by Auto Trader’s unique Auto Trader Retail Rating metric, which analyses national live market supply and consumer demand to assign a 1-100 retail rating as well as the number of days the vehicle is likely to sell when priced at the current market value. Continuously updating to reflect the live retail market, it utilises the full scale of Auto Trader’s data capabilities. And unlike other models which offer a retrospective look at the previous month, and therefore an already out of date view of a fast-moving market, the Auto Trader Fastest Selling Index provides the most up to date marketplace intelligence.

The metric is based on analysis of over 1.9 million vehicles each day, including 90,000 vehicle updates and an average of 19,000 vehicles added or removed from Auto Trader. Coupled with data from circa 450,000 daily trade used car listings, as well as additional dealer forecourt and website data, it’s the industry’s largest and most robust dataset.

The scale of the analysis enables a more granular view of the market than the previous Auto Trader Fastest Selling Cars methodology, including region and fuel type, as well as which cars are predicted to be the slowest to sell, even when priced to the market.

Fastest selling by fuel type:

Using the data to examine the different fuel types, the used petrol car predicted to leave forecourts faster than its competitors is the 2016 BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer (petrol, manual); if priced at its current market value it’s capable of selling in just 24 days. Its diesel counterpart is the 2016 SEAT Alhambra (diesel, automatic), which is currently predicted to sell in just 25 days.

Fastest selling across the regions:

Across the 12 regions and countries tracked by the Index, there was an even split of six diesel and six petrol cars identified to be the current fastest to sell. However, in terms of marque, there was a clear winner: Ford was revealed as the potential fastest in six regions: West Midlands (2016 Ford Kuga – diesel, automatic – 28 days), South West (2016 Ford Grand C-Max – diesel, automatic – 28 days), Scotland (2016 Ford Grand C-Max – diesel, automatic – 28 days).

Commenting on the results, Auto Trader’s director of commercial products, Karolina Edwards-Smajda, said: “Whether influenced by supply, consumer demand or a host of other macro-economic factors, the retail market is in constant flux. As a result, we wanted to evolve our previous fastest selling analysis away from a retrospective view of the market, to an immediate one – rather than revealing what was desirable last month, we want to identify what’s selling fastest today. Because of the unrivalled scale of our data, we can arm retailers with the most accurate view of the live retail market to help them locate the most profitable opportunities for their forecourts.”

Hitting targets will always be determined by how quickly a retailer can turn their stock around and using data is the key to speeding it up. Users of Retail Accelerator, Auto Trader’s data management solution which is powered by the Auto Trader Retail Rating metric, are able to sell their vehicles an average of 12.8 days faster than those retailers that don’t use the data management tool.

Edwards – Smajda continued: “Overage stock is affecting nine out of 10 retailers and costing them an average of £24,285 in lost profits each year. The most effective way to manage the challenge is using market intelligence data to complement their own expertise to ensure they’re bringing in the right cars for their area and pricing them accurately to the market from day one.”
