Auto Trader's Erin Baker wins Automotive Editor of the Year at Newspress Awards 2019

Auto Trader's editorial director scoops prestigious automotive journalism award

Erin Baker, Auto Trader’s Editorial Director, has received the prestigious Automotive Editor of the Year award at the 2019 Newspress Awards, marking the first time ever a woman has won the title.  

Now in its fourth year, the Newspress Awards celebrates excellence in automotive journalism and public relations. Erin secured her win thanks to what the judges described as a combination of tenacity, hard work and creativity, which have helped increase article views on Auto Trader by 66% and dwell time by 13%.

Above all, it was her bold approach to editing that set her apart from her fellow nominees of talented editors.

Erin’s long-held determination to improve female representation in the automotive and lifestyle press, and to move away from traditional male-centric content, was the perfect fit with Auto Trader’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Since joining the business in October 2017, Erin has introduced a number of editorial initiatives to help ‘tip the balance back’ towards a more gender neutral industry, including the REV Test: a web TV series led by an all-female editorial review team (Rachael Hogg, Erin, and former racing driver, Vicki Butler-Henderson).   

Outside of her role at Auto Trader, Erin is an accomplished automotive journalist contributing to a variety of specialist and lifestyle press, including writing Marie Claire’s first ever series of car reviews.  

Commenting on her win, Erin said:I’m thrilled to have won the Automotive Editor of the Year award. Auto Trader has worked hard to make sure its editorial content is both informative and engaging, so I’m pleased the industry has recognised our endeavours.

I’m also proud to be the first female motoring journalist to accept this award. There are 11.8m female motorists in the UK: women are increasingly important automotive consumers, with strong opinions and spending power; they should be reflected in the media they watch, listen to and engage with.”
