Press release

VW Sharan diesel was UK’s fastest selling car in September

2013 Volkswagen Sharan MPV diesel auto was the fastest selling car nationally.

  • 2013 Volkswagen Golf diesel was the fastest seller in Wales
  • 2012 Volkswagen Polo petrol was the fastest seller in the South West
  • 2013 Seat Leon diesel was the fastest seller in the South
  • 2014 Volkswagen Passat diesel estate was the fastest seller in Scotland

The fastest selling used car in the key plate-change September car market was a Volkswagen diesel. The Sharan MPV sold in an average of just 13 days across the UK, according to latest data collated by Auto Trader, the country’s largest marketplace for new and used cars.

Fastest selling cars in September 2015

Rank Year, make and model Days to sell Price position Retail price
1 2013 Volkswagen Sharan MPV Diesel Automatic 13 100.4% £15,915
2 2012 Kia Sportage SUV Petrol Manual 16 99.7% £12,808
3 2011 Vauxhall Insignia Hatchback Petrol Manual 19 98.4% £6,703
4 2012 Mercedes-Benz B Class Hatchback Petrol Auto 21 99.5% £14,853
5 2014 Vauxhall Mokka Hatchback Petrol Automatic 21 98.8% £14,639
6 2013 Toyota AYGO Hatchback Petrol Semi-Automatic 21 99.5% £6,458
7 2012 Chevrolet Orlando MPV Petrol Automatic 22 98.9% £8,094
8 2012 Volkswagen Touran MPV Diesel Automatic 23 98.0% £12,357
9 2012 Mercedes-Benz C Class Saloon Petrol Automatic 23 98.9% £18,499
10 2010 Nissan Qashqai+2 Hatchback Diesel Manual 23 97.9% £10,096

In addition to the national top ten – which also included the VW Touran MPV diesel in eighth position – VW Group models reported fastest selling cars in four UK regions. The 2013 VW Golf diesel was the fastest seller in Wales, the 2014 Passat diesel estate took the top spot in Scotland and the 2012 VW Polo petrol was the quickest mover in the South West. Meanwhile, the 2013 Seat Leon diesel was the fastest seller in the South.

“Auto Trader reports these figures on a monthly basis, but I have no doubt that data for September will be scrutinized in great detail by motor industry commentators,” said Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Auto Trader Director Retailer & Consumer Products. “A note of caution however: September’s top ten will reassure a lot of franchise outlets, as well as independent retailers selling used VW models, but it’s worth remembering that the emissions crisis did not break in the media until 21st of the month. We will really have to wait until October’s data to see if VW diesel models continue to perform strongly on the forecourt.

“What we can underline is the continuing importance of transparency in all areas of the new and used car markets,” she added. “On pricing for example, our data tells us that the VW Sharan was the only model in the top ten that sold for more than its optimum price point, according to Auto Trader’s comprehensive data on valuations. That in itself should provide reassurance that, thus far, there doesn’t appear to have been any need for discounting on VW models.”

Auto Trader publishes top tens for fastest selling cars every month. At least 30 sales of each make and model variant must be made to qualify for inclusion in the charts.
