Motorsport: how do women feel the fear and do it anyway?

  • Episode one of Women in the driving seat, a brand new podcast from Auto Trader, features Nathalie McGloin, FIA Disability and Accessibility Commission President and Vicki Butler Henderson, racing driver and the first female presenter on BBC’s Top Gear to drive a car sideways.
  • The conversation covers if women can cope with the physicality of motorsport (“yes!”), tears behind the wheel (“we’re not a failure, we’re just stressed”) and what plates the guests have been spinning, including “getting to grips with an air fryer”.
  • This episode will be available to listen to on all podcast platforms from Thursday 20th February.

20th February, London- New Auto Trader podcast Women in the driving seat, hosted by Editorial Director, divorced mum of two and award-winning motoring journalist Erin Baker launches today, Thursday 20th February. The series aims to rip up the rule book on the female-empowerment narrative by sharing personal as well as professional experiences, examining the space where both collide, and the challenges, fears and successes happen.

Episode one spotlights women in motorsport and explores topics such as origin stories - from an interest passed down by a father to a car being a place where a disability isn’t the first thing someone notices – as well as how to deal with failure.

All episodes in the series feature a Pit Stop – a quick fire round covering the professional and personal including; Lark or owl? Circuit or circuits? Phone by the bed or phone downstairs?

Join Erin as she puts two women who are “made of different stuff mentally” in a different kind of driving seat.

Podcast preview

Vicki Butler-Henderson:

  • “Somebody that I knew, my dad, had a passion for cars and he opened that door for me”
  • “When I was 17, I was doing my a levels, wanted to step up to be a formula 1 driver, I realised it wasn’t going to work. Hard lesson for me to learn, that my dream career was over.”
  • “I have been really blessed to be a woman in this world…I think I love it because I am a bit different, I love that I can slide a car around and people are like ooohh.”
  • “When my second son was born (…) it brought home to me how much my job and how much driving and racing and being around people is important to me.”

Nathalie McGloin:

  • “It started from a passion for cars because of what that meant for me as a disabled person, and then the speed came.”
  • “Formula one cars are designed for men, the seats aren’t designed for hips, the steering wheel is a certain size. But women can be professional drivers… it’s about skill, bravery and finance.”
  • “I thought, I don’t actually know how I’m going to cope with this failure… I just don’t know how I’m going to get over this. How did I deal with it? Some people just don’t go on the banking… maybe I’m just one of those people.”

Auto Trader’s new podcast Women in the driving seat launches Thursday 20th February, with new episodes launching every Thursday.
