Autotrader supercharges AI-driven car search

  • Autotrader app is now available in ChatGPT, allowing consumers to discover vehicles through natural, conversational prompts, with other platforms to follow.

Autotrader, the UK’s biggest automotive marketplace, has launched its app in ChatGPT, enabling millions of car buyers to discover the right vehicle more easily, using natural, conversational prompts powered by its proprietary data.

Rather than launching a singular, standalone application, however, Autotrader has engineered foundational, plug-and-play infrastructure using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) – an industry standard that enables AI agents to connect to trusted platforms at scale. This advanced technical capability allows the UK's largest automotive marketplace to work with multiple leading Large Language Models (LLMs), futureproofing the car buying journey and enhancing the visibility and discoverability of retailer stock for consumers across new digital environments.

In essence, it will allow Autotrader’s marketplace to be accessed within AI-driven search experiences, helping connect buyers with relevant vehicle more quickly. And with its app now available in ChatGPT, UK consumers can search Autotrader’s extensive used car inventory using natural, conversational prompts, such as “I’m looking for a family SUV with a big boot”, before moving through to the marketplace to view listings, compare options and contact retailers.

More than just an app

By using MCP, Autotrader is positioned to expand its presence across the AI landscape. It plans to utilise this exact same interface to connect with other major AI providers in the coming months. This strategy ensures that as consumer search habits evolve, Autotrader's technology remains the definitive underlying engine for new and used vehicle search in the UK.

Protecting retailer access to consumer demand in the AI era

For Autotrader’s retailer partners, this approach builds on the already industry-leading visibility delivered by the marketplace. As an increasing number of consumers use AI assistants, this infrastructure guarantees that Autotrader’s marketplace—and consequently, its retailers' stock—remains the primary destination for automotive queries. By capturing the audience wherever they choose to search, Autotrader is actively enhancing retailers’ ability to connect with in-market demand, while giving consumers more flexible ways to begin their search.

These AI search experiences operate higher up the purchase funnel, helping consumers explore and narrow down their options earlier in the journey. Crucially, they are designed to complement — not replace — searching on Autotrader, with all routes ultimately directing buyers to the marketplace, where they can access Autotrader’s full suite of established tools and functionality designed to support decision making as they move closer to purchase, and browse the UK’s largest pool of vehicles from the widest range of sellers to find the right car more quickly.

This development is the latest expansion of Autotrader’s comprehensive, long-term AI strategy, which is supported by a dedicated in-house workforce of over 400 product and technology specialists. Crucially, the success of these solutions – whether operating directly on the Autotrader platform or connecting externally via LLMs – is fuelled by the unmatched scale, history, and quality of Autotrader’s proprietary data. Decades of highly structured automotive intelligence serve as the vital foundation that powers these advanced models, ensuring they deliver highly accurate, market reflective results.

The Autotrader app in ChatGPT builds directly upon Autotrader’s recent, multi-layered transformation of its own on-site search experience. Recognising that modern buyers do not always know the exact make and model they want, Autotrader introduced its AI-powered ‘I’m looking for’ categories. These intelligent filters allow consumers to discover vehicles based on real-world lifestyle needs—such as All-rounders, Big boots, or Cheaper insurance—intelligently matching them to a wider array of brands and fuel types they may not have discovered organically.

Building on these lifestyle categories, Autotrader is also testing a dedicated, prompt-based AI search experience on its own platform. This allows buyers to type exactly what they are looking for using full sentences or keywords, and the AI automatically applies any relevant search facets and marketplace filters to match their specific query. Extending this advanced natural-language capability to external AI agents like ChatGPT takes this frictionless, highly personalised discovery a step further.
